What's more important:
How we train
or
Why we train
Without the 'why' the how can make no sense, it can't logically exist.
Watch a man train, you should be able to see what his goals are...so what goals are served by doing tricep kick-backs, exactly?
Tonight's training?
Clean & Press
Pull-Ups
Bulldog Swings
Full Burpees
My goals?
You tell me...

Lazy Sunday
Hmmm....
Woke up surprisingly early, after last nights James Bond themed Christmas 'party'. I dipped out of the 'party' proper early for what is best described as 'personal reasons' or even 'personality dysfunction issues' - I'm just being honest, cos I could easily have blamed the really low quality 3 course mail that cost me 30 quid that I'll never see again (strictly speaking it cost me £45, but don't get me started....
Said dipping out led to me getting the f**k out of Dodge and drinking til about 3am - yeah, I know...but check the small print and tell me where it says I have to be a saint?
Had a client who I hadn't seen for over 6 months this morning, and ran thru some KB basics, RKC style, then thru in some of the new curve-ball stuff I've been working on - more info to follow, for any interested parties...
Lazy afternoon followed, with very brief training:
Kettlebell Push-ups 4 sets of 20 - one arm on the floor, one hand on an 8kg KB, shoulder into the bell on each rep.
Wrestlers Bridges 4 sets of 20
Crucifix Squats 4 sets of 20
Headstand with isometric contractions every 10 seconds - 2 minutes
I said it was abbreviated, but whole body done, and no equipment!
The snow is falling, the seasons turn, people come and go - but the Iron is always true, and so are your truest friends...You Know Who You Are - even if sometimes I don't.

Old Skool.
Don't ask why.
Just accept that I abandoned yesterday's published snatch plan, and went with 2 old time Olympic bar classics:
Side Press Kick-Ass Side Press Article
Steinborn Squats Steinborn Squat Video
I haven't done either for probably 3 years, so both were done hi-set, low rep, low weight - as Pavel would say "Practice not training"
Whole body workout, 2 exercises.
Simples.
On the downside, tomorrow's trip to Bournemouth to train with RAFF legend Vadim Kolganov has been cancelled due to lack of local participants...pretty disappointing when some of us were making 2 or 3 hour journeys to be there, and Vad himself was coming down from Scotland, but as usual it's a case of people talking the talk but not walking the walk:
To be a fighter you have to fight.
And that, also, is simples.

Minus 2
For a day that started with me unable to speak -because I had a bad throat, not because I woke up bound and gagged - I guess it didn't finish too badly.
I picked up a new client because he'd 'seen me doing the Kettleballs [sic] and it looked cool' - so despite the misnomer it's good that someone actually observes what we do and recognises it's value. All too often now I find that people don't get or don't like KBs because they've either seen, or worse still had sessions with, half trained or incompetent 'bandwagon' trainers!
As we say at Sparta HTS:
"There's a difference between a trainer with a Kettlebell and a Kettlebell Trainer!" - sadly Gym Public (see what I did there?) doesn't always get this difference!
Anyway, after picking up new client, and contnuing a week long argument with my closest friend, I finished off by putting my final client, SP, through a kick-donkey Swing, Clean & Press and Snatch workout, culminatiing with a set of 20 metre each way walking snatches - only with a 16, but let's just say he was glad when it was over.
Messed around with some rotating snatches, and my wrist felt ok, so I'll maybe try some more tomorrow and give some detailed feedback for anyone who's interested...er, that may just be me, then :)
Meanwhile, out in the carpark, it was minus 2 degrees, and the windscreen was covered in ice...welcome to winter!

Strange Mindset & Failure To Plan
Today really didn't go as planned.
Which makes me question the whole point of planning.
Three kick-ass PT sessions with some of my most hardcore clients got the day off to a flyer, but it was pretty much all down hill from there...not helped by receipt of texts from about 27 different people, none of whom was the person I actually wanted to hear from.
Such is life.
My life, anyway.
A long and frustrating evening, pretty much caused by my own long and frustrating attitutude, culminated in a way-too-easy 'workout' - yes, just one today, please feel free to post your complaints and abuse!
What started off as a genuine intention at the week's first Convict Conditioning workout ended up as Offset Medicine Ball Push-Ups, Close Grip Push-Ups, and Uneven Pull-Ups, rounded off with some Dragon Press. It left me feeling pumped but unfulfilled...since when has my purpose been to feel pumped, hench, stacked, or any other narcissistic goal you could name?
Ferzackely!
Ignoring the abortive non-workout, you may well be wondering about Convict Conditioning, because from what I can see on the Interweb it has a pretty controversial track record.
My take is this: it works. Pure and simple.
In the same way any good programme works...you stick to it, you do the basics, and everything else takes care of itself...if you think functional training involves balancing on gym balls and messing around with cable machines, I have to warn you that you may well be reading the wrong page...

Happy Monday
The first words are always the most important.
Why am I here?
Why are you here?
With a nod to my old friend - I hope I can call you that, brother - Will Williams, for inspiring me, welcome to the chronicles of my humble, and sometimes not so humble, attempts at self improvement.
(Yes, I love Fight Club, but no Tyler, I don't belive self improvement is masturbation...I believe it's the endless, endless because by definition it can have no ultimate goal, quest for our ultimate selves.
Physically and Spritually.)
Some of you may be familiar with my combat and endurance sport background, some of you may not. Either way, it's not important. Where we start is irrelevant. Where we finish, and where we stop off along the way, is far more relevant, and more interesting.
Having said that, where we start is always the same place:
Right here, right now.
And right here, right now, it's a rainy Monday night in Coventry.
Happy Monday, my brothers and sisters
